Sony announces the Xperia 5 IV smartphone with 4K/120p

Sony has announced its latest smartphone, the Xperia 5 IV. As with its predecessors, this model takes inspiration from Sony’s higher-end Xperia devices and packages it into a smaller, more affordable package.

On the imaging front, the Xperia 5 IV uses the same camera array found on the Xperia 5 III, with 16mm, 24mm and 60mm full-frame equivalent camera modules with F2.2, F1.7 and F2.4 apertures, respectively. Each of these modules use a 12MP sensors, but get an increased 120 frames per second (fps) readout speeds. This increased readout speed helps provide the bandwidth for Real-time Eye AF and Real-time tracking for all three camera modules.

Sony is using Zeiss’ T* coating on the front elements of each camera module for improved image quality and includes a physical shutter button on the side of the device for more convenient image capture.

For stills, each of the three rear cameras can capture stills up to 20fps with HDR capture. For video, all three cameras can record 4K HDR video at up to 120fps and features Object Tracking and Eye AF in video recording. Sony has also added livestreaming support to each of the three rear cameras, as well as the 12MP camera on the front of the device, which is capable of 4K HDR video capture.

The 6.1″ 21:9 HDR OLED display on the front of the camera is the ‘brightest ever FHD+ display’ put into a Sony Xperia device and ‘is approximately 50% brighter than its predecessor, the Xperia 5 III, according to Sony. On top of the display is Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus.

At the core of the Xperia 5 IV is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Mobile Platform, the same chipset found in most flagship devices released earlier this year. Other features include a 5,000mAh battery, improved stereo speakers, fast charging (30W), wireless charging and reverse wireless charging via Sony’s Battery Share feature. Oh, and there’s a 3.5mm headphone port.

The device comes standard with 5G connectivity, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage. Measurements come in at 156mm (6.14″) tall by 67mm (2.64″) wide by 8.2mm (.32″) thick and the device weighs 172g (6oz). It’s also rated for IP65/68 to minimize damage if dropped into water.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV is set to be available at the ‘end of October 2022 for approximately $1000,’ according to Sony. In addition to the standard black colorway, an exclusive green version will be available exclusively through Sony’s online shop. Pre-orders begin today, September 1, at 11am EDT.

For Vloggers and video creators, the Xperia 5 IV comes with an external monitor function. By connecting a mirrorless camera (such as Alpha series cameras), creators can monitor their work on the Xperia 5 IV‘s 6.1” FHD display and instantly share their content using the new livestreaming function. The Xperia 5 IV on Set and in the Studio

The Xperia 5 IV was recently used to shoot an entire music video for Sony Music artist, Cat Burns, bringing to life her latest single, “People Pleaser.” The creative vision for “People Pleaser” was captured utilizing the high-quality imaging capabilities and manual setting options within the Videography Pro app.

“Creating content on Xperia 5 IV allows you to use your imagination, packing progressive technology into a compact device you can carry around allows everyday people to become filmmakers,” commented Nathan James Tettey, Music Video Director.

Cat Burns used the Music Proiv app to record an acapella of the chorus used in the video. “Being able to record great audio and upload it straight away without having to use a laptop is such a great feature and saves time in my hectic schedule,” said Cat Burns, Sony Music artist.

Music Pro can reproduce the frequency response of a condenser microphone while producing the reverberation of a studio mix. Sound recording and editing is free of charge, while cloud processing for the highest-quality sound is subject to a monthly fee.

The Xperia 5 IV offers Sony’s 360 Reality Audio and has three options for high-quality audio, which includes a wired 3.5mm audio jack, wireless headphones, or front-facing Full-Stage stereo speakers. The stereo speakers include a new structure that produces clearer sound and low-frequency performance. By combining DSEE Ultimate and LDAC support, the Xperia 5 IV supports streaming services with high resolution sound quality. The Xperia 5 IV also supports the latest Bluetooth LE Audio.
